IP Geolocation with IPv6 Address Data

 

Well before the depletion of IPv4 addresses became a threat, Neustar IP Intelligence provided IPv6 data. As IPv6 adoption has continued to gain steam, we’ve continued to develop data to help you geo-locate customers, localize web content, fight fraud, control digital media and analyze site traffic.

IPv6 Frequently Asked Questions

What API do I use to get IPv6 data?
Use the same API and URL you use for accessing IPv4 data from GeoPoint On-Demand. The API returns data for either IP address format in either JSON or XML.

Can I use shorthand IPv6 addresses when using the API?
Yes, the API accepts all valid short notations. The shorthand permits abbreviation of consecutive zeros from the text representation by adding an additional set of colons. For example: leading “0”s within each 2-byte piece can be dropped: fec0:0:0:0:220:edff:fe6a:f76.

Also, a single series of “0”s can be dropped and replaced with two adjacent colons to signify that “0”s can be added to make the address fit into 128 bits: 37::51F4:9BC8:C0A8::6420.

What’s the format of the IPv6 data file?
The data is in our standard CSV file format. The header row is designed to let you load data based on the column name, so you can expand your ETL process (extraction, transformation and loading) as we expand our data fields. The fields are quote encapsulated and comma separated. Each row contains a block of IP addresses that share field values.

How much IPv6 data can I expect?
As of March 2013 there were 160K blocks of assignment in the database. The growth of the data has been roughly 6% per month. New blocks are assigned and already assigned blocks are further subdivided weekly. Accelerated growth of the data is expected as we integrate more usage data obtained from IPv6 traffic witnessed by Neustar and as part of the customer participation in our closed loop system. The closed loop system is a hallmark of our technology and provides valuable information that assures improved granularity and accuracy, and also impacts IPv6 geolocation.
