On Tuesday, April 14th, Neustar’s John Devolites hosted an impressive panel of executives from U.S Cellular, Windstream, Mediacom, and Level 3 who shared how their networks are boosting bottom-line revenues through Ethernet backhaul solutions. Their presentation, entitled “Backhaul and the Bottom Line: How CLECs Can Benefit in Today’s Environment,” was one of the featured highlights at this month’s COMPTEL PLUS Business Expo 2015 in Orlando, and revealed how leading competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) are using Ethernet-based backhaul solutions to expand network coverage, reduce costs, and deliver a better subscriber experience.

In case you missed it, here are some of the key points that emerged during the panel’s presentation:

  • The market for Carrier Ethernet services is being driven by higher and lower pressures: higher mobile data traffic (particularly video) and higher infrastructure costs, coupled with lower subscriber revenue and lower barriers to market entry for competitors (including over-the-top providers);
  • CLECs are using Ethernet backhaul to close intra-market coverage gaps, better serve rural customers, and bring new IP-based and fixed wireless services to tertiary markets;
  • A lack of standardized and automated ordering processes is slowing down Ethernet adoption at some carriers;
  • Recent mergers and consolidations in the communications industry have placed added pressure on CLECs to accelerate their plans for Ethernet backhaul;
  • Some CLECS have aggressive plans to increase their Ethernet adoption rate over the next 12 months.

Our thanks to panelists Mike Dienhart (U.S. Cellular), Jeff Brown (Windstream), Dan Templin (Mediacom) and Adam Saenger (Level 3) for sharing their insights, the COMPTEL PLUS event organizers, and everyone who attended our panel.
