.CO Internet S.A.S. (jointly owned by Neustar and the Colombian company Arcelandia S.A.) launched public registration for the new .CO domain on July 20. The registry handled over 90 thousand registrations in the first 15 minutes. A little over a week after the General Availability launch, the registry now contains over 380,000 domain names.
In the Launch Phases leading up to the official public opening of the domain, .CO Internet received over 39,000 domain applications including Grandfathering, Sunrise and Landrush. This includes the corresponding .CO domain names for the majority of the Brand Finance Top 500 brands, including Amazon, American Express, Apple, BMW, Cartier, Canon, CNN, Coca-Cola, Disney, EBay, Exxon, Ford, Google, Hilton, Honda, IBM, IKEA, Kodak, McDonalds, Microsoft, MTV, Nestle, Nike, Nokia, Panasonic, Pfizer, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, Toyota, Unilever, Visa, and Yahoo, to name just a few.
The .CO name space gives Internet users worldwide a truly global, credible and recognizable option for branding their online presence. It’s also the perfect platform for today’s socially networked individuals, entrepreneurs and companies to create COmmunities, share COntent, and COnnect with COnsumers around the world.
In conjunction with the .CO launch, Neustar added a new UltraDNS network node in Bogotá, Colombia—the first in South America—that greatly enhances the Internet browsing experience of users in the burgeoning Latin America market.
