Number Pooling
Number pooling, also known as thousands-block number pooling, allows for the disbursement of numbering resources to service providers in thousand-number parcels. Since being awarded the FCC's National Pooling contract in June 2001, NeuStar has transitioned number pooling from the state level to the national level.
NeuStar coordinates the allocation of numbers to particular service providers through the Number Portability Administration Center Service Management System (NPAC/SMS). In addition, the company has worked with the telecommunications industry to develop the initial Pooling Administration guidelines and the automated Pooling Administration System.
- NeuStar served as Pooling Administrator for wireline pooling trials in 22 states and 84 number planning areas before national pooling was implemented.
- Since the commencement of the national rollout, we have conducted pooling First Implementation Meetings in over 150 additional NPAs.
- Working with wireless carriers, we assisted in developing Native Block Pooling, as well as the transition processes that enabled wireless service providers to successfully enter the pooling environment on November 24, 2002.
NeuStar's Interactive Voice Response (IVR) Unit
NeuStar's IVR Unit enables public safety answering point (PSAP) and law enforcement personnel to find out which service provider is currently servicing a specific ported or pooled telephone number. If your agency or organization needs to register one or more PIN numbers with which to access the IVR unit, visit the above link.
